The data represent annual values of the glacier mass balance measured with the direct glaciological method. The mass balance is calculated from ablation of ice and accumulation of snow measured at about 10 to 20 stakes for the mass balance year from 1 October to 30 September of the following year. The data comprises the glacier area, the net mass balance for the total glacier area as well as specified for the ablation and accumulation area, the altitude of the equilibrium line (ELA) and the specific mass balance.

observation: Level4 The mass balance data is georeferences with the help of GPS positions to plus minus 5 m in the North/East direction. All vertical components relate to the LaserScan DEM of 2006 for the years after 2008 (vertical accuracy: 10^-1m, elevation change since then: up to 15 m).
Before 2008, the calculation of the mass balance was based on glacier inventory data and orthophoto maps, so that the horizontal and vertical position
g is less accurate by approximately a factor of 10.
The accuracy of the stake and pit measurements is about 100 mm w.e.; the error caused by the manual spatial interpolation of the data depends on the ablation itself and the number of available additional data on snow cover.;The stake data was quality controlled and error corrected.
