Satellite derived global fields of air-sea fluxes and parameters in different spatial and time resolutions

Experiment
Summary
Global estimates of air-sea fluxes suffer often from the lack of data over remote ocean areas, especially in the southern hemisphere. To study the local, regional, and global variability of the parameters, polar orbiting radiometers like the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radimeter (AVHRR) which both provide an almost global coverage within a few days have been used to establish a new satellite-derived climatology.
Within HOAPS(Hamburg Ocean Atmosphere Parameters and Fluxes from Satellite Data) surfaces fluxes and parameters were computed with recently developed methods from SSM/I and AVHRR data. All retrieval methods have been validated in comprehensive comparison studies with in situ measurements and were in good agreement within the required accuracies.
The data sets consists of daily, pentade (5-days) and monthly means of different parameters and fluxes on a global grid with three different spatial resolution(0.5, 1.0, 2.5 deg.) for the 10 years time period 1987-1996.
This data has been originally developed in a working group on satellite remote sensing at the Universität Hamburg and the Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany. They were replaced with time by continually improved versions through the HOAPS project, which is now hosted at the EUMETSAT Climate-Monitoring Satellite Application Facility (CM-SAF) at the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach, Germany. The most actual version of the dataset – HOAPS-4 – is described and can be accessed under https://www.cmsaf.eu/EN/Overview/OurProducts/Hoaps/Hoaps_node.html
