The data represent 6-hourly values of selected variables from the ECMWF reanalysis ERA-40 processed for using as input to the COSMO-model preprocessor INT2LM. The preprocessor INT2LM performs the interpolation from various coarse-grid driving data to a rotated limited area COSMO-CLM grid in order to provide initial and/or boundary data for COSMO-CLM integration (see http://www.clm-community.eu). Following variables are contained: - 2D fields: FIS (surf. geopot. height), FR_LAND (land-sea frac.), FR_SEA_ICE (sea ice frac.), PS (surf. pressure), SST (sea surf. temp.), T_S (surf. temp. at bottom of snow), T_SKIN (skin temp.), T_SNOW (snow temp.), W_I (canopy water amount), W_SNOW (surf. snow amount) - 3D atm. fields on 49 model levels: QC (cloud liquid water content), QI (cloud ice content), QV (specific humidity), T (temperature), U (U-component of wind), V (V-component of wind) - 3D soil fields on 4 soil levels: T_SO (soil temp.), W_SO_REL (ratio of volume frac. of soil moisture to pore volume), VW_SO (volumetric soil water content, obsolete) The time period covered is from 1958-01-01T00:00 to 2002-08-31T18:00. The data are in netCDF format. Technical description: The upper 11 levels from the ERA-40 dataset are omitted. ERA-40 data were converted from GRIB to IEG format and then to netCDF following CF-1.0 conventions and INT2CLM requirements. The adaptation for INT2LM was made using the CLM3toCLM4 converter: (i) soil depth coordinates "soil1" shifted from the lower boundary to the middle of the soil layers, (ii) volumetric soil water content transformed to relative soil moisture by scaling with pore volume of 0.472 and (iii) dimension names "sbnds" and "tbnds" replaced by "bnds". These data can be also found in hpss:/dxul/ut/10/prj/bm0162/b364034/ERA40_CLM4 (for 01.1968 - 08.2002). Please, rename variable W_SO_RPV as W_SO_REL. The global ERA-40 input data for CLM3 preprocessor INT2CLM can be found in hpss:/dxul/ut/10/g260026/ERA40/cas.
